Applying for Australian Citizenship

Obtaining Australian citizenship is the final step in the migration process. Children born in Australia to Permanent Residents of Australian Citizen parents automatically acquire Australian citizenship. Children born overseas to Australian Citizen parents may apply for Australian citizenship. Permanent residents who have lived in Australia for the required period of time are eligible to apply for citizenship.

• Register your children as Australian citizens;
• Be eligible for emergency assistance from Australian consular staff when travelling in foreign countries;
• Not be removed or deported from Australia.

 

These rights and responsibilities are in addition to those that people already hold as permanent residents of Australia.
