Bringing a family member to Australia

The Australian government is committed to allowing Australian citizens and permanent residents to bring their family members to Australia. There are a variety of visa options that allow family members to migrate:

  • Partner visas;
  • Fiancé (Prospective Marriage) visas;
  • Spouse visas;
  • Parent visas (including contributory parent visas);
  • Remaining relative visas;
  • Carer visas.

The potential for success of these visa applications is based on the relationship with the Australian citizen or permanent resident. That person becomes the sponsor of their relative for the purpose of the application.

The evidence that needs to be provided will vary depending on the visa application; however you must prove the relationship between the Australian sponsor and the applicant. The applicant will also be required to meet the general health and character public interest criteria. Sometimes an applicant needs to provide an Assurance of Support.

Due to the complexity and varying visas available, Canberra Immigration Lawyers will help you navigate the application process.
